Happy “Australia Day” everyone. We hope you are enjoying the heat and we have some super info for you in this edition:

1. ESL job opportunity

The Japanese School in Perth has informed us that they are looking for an ESL teacher to start March/April, when the new Japanese school year starts. The school is in City Beach. The main requirements, in order of importance, are:

1) ESL qualification
2) Good Japanese (not necessarily fluent, and not necessarily specialised, but good enough in a practical sense to roughly interpret between local and Japanese teachers if required)
3) WA teaching qualification

If you are interested, please contact the JSP at info@japaneseschool.wa.edu.au and let them know “Ken sent me”. Just kidding, let them know you are an ex-JET and JETAAWA told you about the position.
Please let us know if you are thinking of applying but not sure if you satisfy enough of 1, 2 and 3, and we’ll point you in the right direction.

2. Hiroba

Each month the Consulate-General emails out Hiroba, an informational e-zine. There are always lots of neat events and photos featured (including us!) and other general info. If you’d like to subscribe, please visit http://www.perth.au.emb-japan.go.jp/hiroba.htm. Thanks!

3. School festival recap

Thanks again to those who participated in our gyoza stall at the Cha-cha-charity event at the Japanese School in November. We donated all our profits, making us the highest donor of all the stalls. In total, the event apparently raised an amazing $30,522.65!

4. Fukushima!

We haven’t forgotten that there are still a lot of people doing it hard in northern Japan, especially now that it’s winter. Fukushima JETs have been selling tshirts to raise funds for the disaster relief efforts. They are ‘i Akabeko Fukushima shirts’, the akabeko being the symbol of aizu, and Fukushima. More info about (and orders for) the tshirts are here http://fukushimatshirt.blogspot.com/p/english.html

5. Upcoming events

Over Feb-March we will likely have an okonomiyaki family BBQ, the official returnees’ reception at the CG, our mega quiz night with JAPSSOC and the AGM. Stay tuned or email us for details!

6. kaiWA

kaiWA is on on break today, 26 January, but is back for February on Thursday 9 and 23, as always from 530-late at 43 Below, corner of Hay and Barrack. Come along and meet new people and try out your rusty Japanese/English!

7. Theatre

For the culture vultures:
The White Divers of Broome

By Hilary Bell

WORLD PREMIERE!

28 January – 16 February 2012

In the boom times of 1912 Broome, Sydney Pigott is a wealthy pearling master looking for a way around the White Australia Policy, anxious to keep his cheap Asian workers – and his high profits.

Webber, Sanders and Beasily are the cream of the British Navy deep sea divers. Hired by Pigott, they arrive in Broome naïvely convinced they’ll prove their skills when they hit the hazardous seas and collect the precious mother-of-pearl. But desperate Asian crews, shadowy alliances and the ruthless environment of Broome are against the white divers from the beginning.

From the brothels to the ballrooms to the deep seas, it’s a cutthroat world and trust is hard to find.

Inspired by the book of the same name by John Bailey, The White Divers of Broome is a celebration of boom time Broome and its exotic clash of cultures. Be captivated by a stirring account of greed, betrayal, loyalty and survival that resonates through the years.

This production also includes all scenes between the Japanese characters Nishi (played by Yutaka Izumihara) and Yukiko (played by Miyuki Lotz) to be spoken in Japanese with English sub-titles.

Venue: Heath Ledger Theatre, State Theatre Centre of WA

Director: Kate Cherry

Featuring: Caitlin Beresford-Ord, Nick Candy, Adriane Daff, Kylie Farmer [Kaarljilba Kaardn], Michelle Fornasier, Stuart Halusz, Sean Hawkins, Yutaka Izumihara, Miyuki Lotz, Greg McNeill, Kenneth Moraleda, Jo Morris, Tom O’Sullivan, Ian Toyne

Tickets: Standard $69.50 / Concession $54.50 / Previews $52.50 / Family Package $158 / Groups 8+ $53.50 (plus 1 free ticket for every 10 tickets purchased) / Students $29.50

Warning: Some coarse language and adult themes.

Thanks all!

JETAAWA operated a stall cooking and selling gyoza at the Cha-cha-charity event at the Japanese School in Perth on 27 November 2011, replacing the usual JSP bunkasai. From early morning until mid-afternoon, volunteers worked hard to serve an ever-increasing queue of ravenous customers. The result? A total, after expenses, of almost $700 was donated to the Japanese Red Cross via Niji-no-kai. That was the largest donation from any single stall.

The official blurb is:

ARRIETTY
In cinemas 12 January | Madman Entertainment

This is a story of a family of ‘little’ people.
Beneath the floorboards of a sprawling mansion set in a magical, overgrown garden in the suburbs of Tokyo, tiny 14-year-old Arrietty lives with her equally tiny parents. The house is occupied by two old ladies, who are absolutely unaware of the existence of their miniature tenants. Arrietty and her family live by ‘borrowing”. Everything they have, they borrow or make from the things they have borrowed. Essentials like gas, water and food. Tables, chairs, cooking utensils. And treats – a sugar cube here, a scrap of material there. But only a little each time, so the ladies do not notice. A 12-year-old boy, Sho, moves into the mansion while he waits for urgent medical treatment in the city. Arrietty’s parents have always warned her: “Never let humans see you”. Once seen, little people always have to move on. But the adventurous Arrietty doesn’t listen, and Sho discovers her.

The two begin to confide in each other and, before long, a friendship begins to blossom…

The catch? We get to run your responses in the annual newsletter. We’ll contact winners with further details on collecting your prize! Good luck! Entries close 31 December 2011.

Merry Xbox!

6. EDUCATION EXCHANGE SCHOLARSHIP

The Program will support short term, two-way education exchange between Australia and affected areas of Japan (including Tokyo). It is designed to provide opportunities for students, academics, researchers and professionals in Australia to travel to the affected areas of Japan to study or to continue or enhance their collaboration in education with their partner institutions, and vice versa. Applicants will be able to seek financial support for an exchange occurring in 2011 or 2012.

Details are available here.

7. PHOTO CONTEST

To help celebrate the , we are currently planning an open photo competition for the first half of 2012. It is anticipated that there will be a Hyogo Prefecture division and a separate JET division (as well as open divisions). Time to start fossicking through your old snaps!

8. kaiWA

kaiWA continues as usual, at 43 Below from 1730 every second Thursday. Dates are available at jetaawa.com. kaiWA is the perfect opportunity to chat with Japanese people staying in Perth, polish your Japanese, polish someone else’s English, or just shoot the breeze. See you there! It’s free and fun!

9. JAPANESE SCHOOL FESTIVAL

Unfortunately, it seems there will not be a bunkasai this year. Instead, the JSP is apparently cooperating with the Japanese Association for a charity fundraising event in November. We will keep you posted and will still be looking for excuses to cook gyoza.

10. HYOGO-WA SISTER STATE RELATIONSHIP

On 5 August 2011 the President and Treasurer had the honour of attending the 30th anniversary celebration reception for the sister state/prefecture relationship between WA and Hyogo. The Premier and the Prefectural Governor made excellent speeches and we had the opportunity to speak with the Governor and the Ambassador, both of whom were very supportive of JETAAWA.

11. BELMONT-ADACHI

JETAAWA is proud of its ongoing relationship with the Belmont-Adachi sister city program. Our Vice-President engaged in interpreting duties for a visiting delegation in August and the JETAAWA table was recently victorious at the fundraising quiz night for the students’ delegation to Japan.

As always, we welcome your comments and feedback.
Please let us know if anything Japan-related is happening in the community, and also if you, as a JETAAWA member, would like anything conveyed to our other members!

Honja!

Hi everyone.

Hot off the presses first is the announcement of our annual Winter Matsuri to the Swan Valley.
This is always a great event for JETAAWA members to catch up and for Japanese participants to learn about some of the great produce WA has to offer.
This year’s edition is on Sunday 26 June 2011. The bus (from a new, reliable company!) departs Barrack Street Jetty 10:00 sharp and returns by 17:00.
Tickets are $25, which includes transport, visits to 2 wineries with tastings, a nougat factory visit with free tasting, a chocolate factory visit with free tasting, a brewery visit and refreshments and cultural activities on the bus.
$25 is a pretty excellent price for this kind of event!
Lunch is BYO or buy on course.
This always sells out quickly. There are limited spots available, so please RSVP to social@jetaawa.com ASAP!
We’ll give you the EFT details for payment in advance.

Next is a Japan travel update via DFAT.

The advisory for travel to Japan has been updated and is now at a reduced level.

The overall Japan advisory level is currently ‘Be alert to own security’.

Travel advice to the affected coastal areas of Northern Honshu is to ‘reconsider’, while travel within 80km of the Fukushima Nuclear Plant is advised against.

View the travel advisory at: http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/Japan
We’d also like to recognise the great efforts of JETAAWA member Rachelle Kearney, who as you may recall recently organised a fundraising movie night for the relief efforts in Japan.
Rachelle managed to raise over $1000 for the cause, which is a pretty awesome effort. Great work!

Finally, there’s an interesting discussion of the recent film Departures (okuribito) at the Hyogo Cultural Centre on Tuesday, June 14th from 4pm to 6pm.
This seminar will introduce participants to the themes and characters of the academy award-winning film: (http://www.madman.com.au/catalogue/view/12066/departures).
It’s aimed at Japanese language educators including native speakers and advanced students in senior secondary, but all are welcome. The presenters demonstrate intercultural language teaching and learning activities through the film.
The session will be presented in Japanese. Participants might like to view the film on DVD in advance. (The DVD is available at major local retailers).
If you are interested in attending, please contact Hyogo Cultural Centre at hyogoprogram@iinet.net.au or on 9385 9002. A flyer is attached:

Hi all -

Just to keep you posted with some great upcoming events and initiatives to have a good time while contributing to the ongoing relief efforts for the nuclear/quake/tsunami disaster (as well as some other interesting events).
Take a look through the following – I’m sure there will be at least one event you can get involved in!

It’s great to see how people are standing up in their own ways, both organisationally and individually, to support the country that has been such an important part of our lives.

Firstly, Support Net Niji no Kai, the local charity through which we have channeled our own fundraising to Red Cross Japan, have received a letter from the Prime Minister of Japan thanking them for their efforts. JETAAWA has played a significant role in those efforts and that thanks should be extended to everyone who has contributed, be it by volunteering, by attending the quiz night, by donating at kaiWA, or otherwise. Well done!

1. FORREST PLACE FUNDRAISER

To be specific, several JETAAWA members volunteered at the Friends of Japan fundraiser in Forrest Place on Saturday 9 April, where over $11,000 was raised. Although the motivation for the event was tragic, it was a great opportunity for the various Japan-Australia groups in WA to combine their strength. I hope that we can have similar events in the future in calmer times. (It seems that something may be in the works for next year.)

2. QUIZ NIGHT

Considering that the above amount was a joint effort involving the cooperation of the City of Perth, I am very proud that JETAAWA’s own fundraising via the Quiz Night and kaiWA was able to raise over $4,200. That was in large part thanks to the hard work of the committee and, in particular, our very generous sponsors. Thanks again to all concerned.

3. CHORAL EVENT

“SING FOR JAPAN”
For those willing to forgo (or record) the Western Derby, this Sunday 15 May there is a choral event, “Sing for Japan”, at St Stephens Uniting Church at 2 Mackenzie Rd Applecross. Admission is $10, with all proceeds going to the victims of the Japan disasters. Performing will be Choir Sakura, The Milky Way, Global Achord barbershop quartet, and youth choirs from various schools. A pdf is attached with further details:

Sing for Japan

4. MOVIE EVENT: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN

JETAAWA member Rachelle Kearney has organised the following event, which we of course support. A flyer is also attached:

Movie Night for Japan Fundraiser

MOVIE NIGHT for JAPAN – FUNDRAISER @ Ace Cinemas Subiaco, May 31st!

Hi everyone!

The recent tragic disaster in Japan has hit very close to home for me. During my time in Japan as an ALT in ‘08 and ‘09 I lived in Tome, a small city in the prefecture of Miyagi, Tohoku. Luckily Tome itself is far enough away from the coast that it wasn’t affected by the tsunami, although the earthquake hit it with its full 9.0 intensity. Nearby towns like Ishinomaki, Minamisanriku and of course Sendai were not so lucky, and as the world now knows, sustained immense damage.

More than a month on, while the world has started to look at other things, my thoughts are still with the Tohoku residents who are still dealing day-to-day with the hardships of post-disaster life. Some of my ALT friends are still living and working in the affected areas, which has given me a pretty good idea of how tricky things have been on the ground. Funds are desperately needed to help people who have lost everything survive the aftermath of the disaster and begin to rebuild their lives.

For this reason I’m organising a fundraising movie night at Subiaco’s Ace Cinemas (Hay St). $10 from every standard ticket sold will go to the Red Cross’s Japan and Pacific Disaster Appeal and also to SaveMiyagi.org, a charity set up by one of my American friends who was present in Miyagi at the time of the disaster, and purely by luck and circumstance is still with us today.

Event Details:
Movie: Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides
Date: 31st May 2011
Time: TBA, evening
Cost: $20 adults, $15 for seniors and school-aged kids
Facebook event link: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=153070884755277&ref=ts

To Purchase:
Contact me at rachelle.kearney@gmail.com or on 0438987160 and I’ll forward you the details… tickets can be purchased via Bank Deposit or Paypal.

Tickets MUST BE PURCHASED by May 24th, one week prior to the event.
JETAAWA and its friends have already helped to raise lots of valuable funds to help our dear friends in Japan find their way out of this tragedy – help me to do my part to raise a little more! Hope to hear from you soon.

Rachelle Kearney, ALT 08-09, Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture.

5. PHOTOS

Simone Addison is also a JETAAWA member and was recently in Japan when the earthquake and tsunami hit the north-east coast. Since returning to Perth she has set up a Japan Disaster Relief Fund to help those in the affected areas.

Simone is a photographer and while she lived in Japan she took many beautiful photographs which are now available for purchase and profits will be donated to the Australian Red Cross (Japan and Pacific Disaster Appeal 2011).

For more info visit http://www.simoneaddisonphotography.com.au/

9. CONFERENCE FOR RETURNING JETS

Last but certainly not least, JETAAWA member Margo Whittle was invited to Yokohama as a speaker for the 2011 Conference for Returning JETs which was held from February 21-23, 2011.

As you may recall, the Conference for Returning JETs is a conference that is held every year for participants finishing up their tenure on the programme, and aims to provide information to JETs about strategies regarding searching for employment, preparing for reverse-culture shock and dealing with the practicalities of returning home etc.

For the speakers, former JET participants who are working in various fields speak about their experiences and give advice on how JET participants might use their experience on the Programme to advance in their future careers. Margo gave a presentation about Japanese Teaching and also was on a panel for Life After JET (Australia), and gave a few one-on-one counselling sessions with JETs who are interested in teaching Japanese. It was a fabulous opportunity and she hopes that such conferences are able to be continued.

Thanks everyone – more details of JETAAWA activities to follow. Don’t forget kaiWA is on at 43 Below from 5:30pm on 19 May and 2, 16, 30 June. Come down and practise your Japanese, teach some English or just make new friends!

Hi everyone.

On behalf of all of JETAAWA I hope that nobody close to you has been lost in the ongoing disaster in northern Japan.
We have been informed by CLAIR that all WA JETs (all ANZ JETs, in fact) in affected areas have at this stage been accounted for, which is a relief.

I am sure that many of you are wondering what you can do to help.
Firstly, of course, Red Cross / Save the Children etc have funds that you can contribute to.

(1) QUIZ NIGHT: 30/3/2011

Another way you can help is by participating in our annual quiz night on 30 March 2011 at the UWA Tavern from 1915 sharp (doors open 1900), held jointly with UWA JapSSoc. Tickets are available on the door and cost $10. All proceeds will go directly to the relief efforts via Support Net Niji-no-kai, a WA charitable organisation that is channeling donations here.

Please RSVP ASAP to president@jetaawa.com.
You can RSVP individually, with friends, or as a table of 8. Even if you can’t get 8 together, we will ensure you have a good team and the opportunity to make new friends!

We have already been generously offered plenty of fantastic prizes from WA businesses and are working to get more.
In addition to prizes for the quiz itself, there will also be auctions of some of the more unique contributions that we have received.

Another way to help, whether or not you are able to participate in the quiz itself, is by making a contribution to the prize pool. If your business or your contacts are willing to donate a prize that we can then auction off to raise further funds it would be wonderful. We will ensure that all contributors are properly recognised and promoted both at the quiz itself and via email to all our and JapSSoc’s members, so you will be getting publicity while helping the relief efforts.

We look forward to your cooperation!

(2) SUNDAY MARKET: 20/3/2011

Niji-no-kai itself is holding its annual stall at the Karrinyup Shopping Centre Sunday markets this Sunday 20 March 2011 from 0630-1130.
All donations and proceeds will go to the relief fund. You should be able to find all sorts of great items for sale, including many Japanese ones.
Again, you will be helping Japan with any purchases!

Thanks everyone – again, we hope everyone you know is safe and look forward to your support.
Please pass this email on to anyone who might be interested.
I understand other organisations are moving forward with their own initiatives and we will pass details on to you as we receive them.

Please also remember that the JETAAWA AGM will be held on Friday 25 March 2011 from 1800 at 43 Below, corner of Hay and Barrack streets.
Please RSVP if you are interested in attending to discuss our year and what we can do to continue to help the relief efforts.
