Hi again everyone. Click on, as we have some updates for you on upcoming events for September/October.

1. SUMMER WARS
Luna Leederville is hosting the Reel Anime movie festival this month, and JETAAWA invites you to come and see the family-friendly Summer Wars at 12:15pm on Sunday 19 September. We have organised for discounted tickets that add up to:
$5 for JET members
$10 for non-members
Please RSVP to sec@jetaawa.com ASAP if you are interested. We still owe a free ticket to someone who responded to the careers survey, so be sure to indicate your interest!

2. RETURNEES
As previously noted, the returnees function is now on Saturday 25 September (after the grand final) at the function room beside Fuji in Vic Park.
Thanks to all those who have RSVPd already – the rest of you, please RSVP ASAP to president@jetaawa.com!
Depending on numbers, we will ask for $5 or $10 to attend, which will cover dinner and drinks.
This event is an important one to let returnees know what JETAAWA has to offer and to share in the experiences of those fresh off the ground!

3. CAREERS
It looks like this year’s Careers Seminar will be on the evening of Tuesday 26 October at UWA.
We are hoping to assemble a presenting line-up consisting of as many ex-JETs as possible, to let attendees (most of whom are current uni students) know the benefits that joining JET can have for them in their future endeavours.
To that end, we would love our members to put their hands up to share their stories of how JET has helped them get where they are today, and how they have been able to use their interest in Japan or knowledge of Japanese to further their own careers. If you are interested, please reply to president@jetaawa.com and employ@jetaawa.com.
In the current context of doubts as to the continuing viability of the JET Program, we think that the Careers Seminar is a real and concrete way of showing that JET does measurably contribute to international relations and understanding at all levels.

4. kaiWA
kaiWA continues at 43 Below (corner Hay/Barrack Sts) from 5:30 each second Thursday – that’s 9/9, 23/9, 7/10, 21/10 upcoming.
Come along and just have a chat, meet new people, or help learn and teach in our J/E language activities!

1) Returnees Party
Having successfully seen off our 2010 JET leavers, we are now happy to welcome back the grizzled vets. As always, we are holding a function to officially welcome them to JETAAWA and introduce the opportunities that JETAAWA can offer.
This year’s welcome back party will be from 6:30pm on Friday 24 September (Friday of the long weekend) at Fuji Restaurant in Vic Park, just over the Causeway. There are plenty of buses and trains nearby.
Dinner and drinks are provided, and to ensure we have an adequate supply, we will probably need to ask for a $5-$10 contribution on attendance.
Of course, this event is open to all members, not just returnees. The more the merrier, so please RSVP soon and catch up with our new members as well as old faces.

2) Reel Anime
Luna Leederville is playing host to this year’s edition of Reel Anime, a mini-festival celebrating Japanese anime. JETAAWA is currently in negotiation to secure tickets to a screening. Details are TBA, but we are hoping it will be:
Tickets: members $5 non-members $10
Date: possibly Sunday 19 September from 1215 or 1915
Movie: Summer Wars
Stay tuned for more info!

3) English teaching opportunity
Blue Travel in Murray Street is currently looking for teachers to teach English to non-native speakers, and has approached JETAAWA to source experienced candidates.
Class times are flexible but would fall withing the range of 900-1730 weekdays. No formal teaching qualification is required. The pay is $20/hour – not massive, but could be good for people trying to get a foot back in the door or just earn a few extra bucks. Classes are 1-on-1.
Inquiries to Yumiko Maeda: yuyumikom@blueco.com.au

4) JET activity survey
The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has, like last year, asked chapters to survey their membership to find out their current occupations.
The info will only be disclosed to MOFA and no personal information will be released other than in a general sense to give examples of some of the ways ex-JETs have used their experiences to continue to contribute to international relations or otherwise.
You are probably aware of the pressure JETAAWA and JET in general is under at the moment in terms of budgeting and viability.
The more data we can compile in response to MOFA’s request, the better. You don’t have to be a diplomat or an interpreter – any info is great!
Please reply to this email with the relevant info – it’s much appreciated! As an incentive, we’ll even offer a free pass to whichever movie is eventually settled on for the Reel Anime screening (see 2 above).
We apologise for the tight deadline, which is this Friday 27 August. It’s only 10 seconds of your time, though, so fire away!
Thanks everyone.

5) Careers seminar
We are currently finalising details for this year’s careers seminar. It’s our aim to have all the presenters be ex-JETs this year, so let us know if you are keen to share your experiences with people looking to turn their interest in Japan into a career.

6) Graytown
This Saturday 28 August from 8pm, Graytown is holding its launch party at 49 King Street. Tickets are $15 and get you canapes and plenty of sake.
Graytown is a group broadly intended to ensure that Japanese visitors to Perth stay safe and don’t find themselves on the pointy end of substandard wages or suspicious language exchange partners. More details are available on 0415 186 208.

7) kaiWA
kaiWA continues at 43 Below on the corner of Hay and Barrack streets each second Thursday from 530-late. Upcoming dates are 26 August and 9 & 23 September.
Remember to bring photo ID. We have also introduced some suggested language activities for those looking to improve their Japanese or help others improve their English!

  August committee meeting
August’s committee meeting will be on Tuesday 31 August from 1915, venue TBA. Let us know if you would like to attend.

9) Regional Conference
Planning continues for the RC 2010 in Fremantle from November 19-21.
Specific details to follow.

Thanks everyone!

1. This is just a quick reminder that this is your last opportunity to RSVP for Let’s Ensoku!, our annual trip to the Swan Valley.
Don’t worry if you haven’t been to many JETAAWA events recently – this is the perfect one to participate casually, bring your friends or fellow ex-JETs, catch up with old friends and make new ones. Details:
Bus leaves at 10:30 sharp from Barrack St Jetty on Sunday 20 June 2010 and returns there by around 5pm
Visiting:
Lancaster Winery
Margaret River Chocolate Company
Edgecombe Bros Winery
Feral Brewery (for lunch)
Mondo Nougat
Tickets are $20 and include wine and cheese tastings, drinks and snacks on the bus, transport, and snacks at Feral. Bargain!
We really hope lots of members take part – we still have about 20 spots but will get rid of them to non-members next week if we don’t hear anything.

2. Don’t forget we also have the Leavers Sayonara Party on Friday 9 July from 6pm at Jun restaurant on Hay Street in Perth.
Convenient, authentic, tasty, and FREE! Dinner and drinks included.
Unfortunately, this one is for members only.
RSVP ASAP!
The leavers function is very important to JETAAWA and, indeed, JET. Ex-JETs can impart their experience of the program in general and of specific regions of Japan to budding JETs, as well as catch up with friends and make new ones. We want the new JETs to enjoy the hospitality of JETAAWA so that they know they have plenty of support here in Perth while they are in Japan and after they return.

3. You also have one last chance to win tickets to Drum Tao:

$280 in prizes!

This year we are designing the official JETAAWA magazine as a “returnees welcome back pack”. We are looking for contributors in any size, shape or form. JETAAWA has received 2 sets of 2 tickets to the performance by Drum-Tao on Tuesday 22 June, and we will be giving them away to the contributions that we consider the best, the funniest, the most interesting, etc. More details below:

We all know the power and primal energy of taiko drumming, and Drum-Tao has received outstanding critical acclaim for its stirring worldwide performances. Drum-Tao is returning to Australia in 2010, with shows from 22-26 June inclusive at the Perth Concert Hall, as well as special performances on 19 June in Mandurah and 27 June in Bunbury. Tickets are available from BOCS and more details are available below.

JETAAWA has been fortunate enough to secure 4 tickets (valued at $70 each!) to the Tuesday 22 June performance by Drum-Tao at the Concert Hall.
At the same time, we have decided that our first official magazine this year should be specially targeted at 2010 returnees, giving them information on ways to deal with reverse culture shock, reminding them of great memories of Japan, and introducing them to ways to continue their relationship with Japan here in WA (restaurants, clubs, etc.)

The upshot is that we are looking for submissions from all of you for the magazine, with the 2 best submissions (in the opinion of the committee) receiving 2 tickets each to see Drum-Tao on 22 June! As noted, we would prefer submissions that might be of use or interest to 2010 returnees. Other than that, the content is up to you!

Given that the committee needs to decide on this prior to the show, the deadline for receiving submissions (which should be sent to media@jetaawa.com) is Sunday 13 June 2010. Good luck – we look forward to a big response!

A special contribution request from our Media Rep:

Watch this (else forward it to ur home so u can see how awesome it is) :

This year we have a HEAP of returnees coming back.. we’re also hosting the 2010 Regional Conference later this year (like.. Oceania is coming to us!!!) so we wanna make an AWESOME mid-year magazine

Our focus is on the returnees – all of you were returnees and know the good/bad/ugly of ESID and returning

1. Let’s Ensoku!

On Sunday 20 June JETAAWA has chartered a bus for the annual Let’s Ensoku! to the Swan Valley. We will be visiting:

Margaret River Chocolate Factory

Edgecombe Bros Winery

Feral Brewery (for lunch)

This is a great event to just relax and enjoy the company of fellow ex-JETs and others, as well, of course, as delicious Swan Valley produce.

Tickets are $20 and this gets you transport, wine and food tastings at the venues and snacks on the bus.
The bus will be leaving from the Barrack Street Jetty at 10:30 am sharp and returning at around 5 pm.
If you would like to come please RSVP ASAP and by Friday June 11 at the latest. Tickets are limited so RSVP early!
Non-members are welcome.

2. Leavers function

This year’s new JETs are leaving town in late July and, as usual, we are hosting a leavers function. This year it is on Friday 9 July from 6pm, probably at Restaurant Jun on Hay Street (TBC). Depending on numbers, attendance will either be free or cost around $5 – this gets you a course meal and bottomless drinks! Score!
Put it in your diary and RSVP ASAP and by Friday 2 July at the latest. Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment, as they say.

The leavers function is very important to JETAAWA and, indeed, JET. Ex-JETs can impart their experience of the program in general and of specific regions of Japan to budding JETs, as well as catch up with friends and make new ones.
